In the early 1970s, Dr. Friedrich Wolff was studying the effect of ultraviolet light on athletes when he noticed an attractive side effect.  With exposure to UV light, his skin developed a deep tan.  With that revelation, he founded what would become one of the most popular cosmetic industries, the indoor tanning industry.  With a great deal of research, he created what came to be known as the Wolff tanning bed.  While tanning through the use of UV light emitters had been done since the turn of the century, the old lamps were considered high pressure lamps, made out of heavy metal.  With the advent of Dr. Wolff's technology, the lamps developed were called low pressure, and everyone agreed that they were significantly more comfortable to use and due to their ability to focus UV light, better, they were a great deal more effective, as well.

Besides the Wolff tanning bed, he also created a great deal of the equipment that is still used to this day, like the reflector system that makes this system ideal for indoor tanning.  Today, tanning in Europe is often regulated by the government and is a highly professional industry that is held to a high national standard.  By 1978, he brought the Wolff tanning bed from Europe to the United States, and people were thrilled with the possibility of being able to acquire a golden brown tan in the middle of winter without ever leaving their home town. 

Today, Wolff tanning beds still have a great deal of recognition when it comes to tanning.  Many older tanners will only use Wolff products and Wolff has taken advantage of this.  Though there are many new producers of tanning beds that have nothing to do with the Wolff tanning bed itself, many of them will still put the "Wolff" name somewhere on the bed for the name recognition.  Only systems that pay the manufacturers of the Wolff tanning beds royalties are allowed to use the term "Wolff Systems" on their product.  Tanning beds that use Wolff products but do not pay a patent to Wolff themselves are permitted to be labeled "powered by Wolff," something that's quite rare in the patent industry.
