Tanning beds are a great way to get that sun kissed glow without spending countless hours baking in the sun.  Tanning beds are popular in most parts of the country.  The tanning craze is enjoyed by both men and women alike.  A tanning bed allows you to have a bronze body, without worrying about spending too much time in the sun.  Tanning beds not only control the amount of light you are exposed to, they also control the intensity of the light. 

Tanning beds have been around since the late 1970s.  However, they did not gain their popularity until the mid 1980s.  A scientist named Friedrich Wolff from Germany first introduced North America to the now popular tanning bed. 

The most popular place to tan is a tanning salon.  Often times, the salons will sell packages which allow their customers to come and tan for a designated number of times.  Some salons sell the packages by the minutes, while others sell them by the sessions. 

However, some people prefer to tan in the convenience of their own home.  Tanning beds for home use can easily be purchased.  You can purchase a tanning bed from an online retailer, direct from the manufacturer or some local stores will carry tanning beds.  It is important that when purchasing a tanning bed for home use,  that you get one that is specifically designed to be used in a home, verses one that is designed to be used in a salon. 

There are a variety of tanning beds available on the market today.  The most popular style of bed is one in which you lay down in.  Another style of tanning bed is a stand up booth.  In either style, Plexiglas covers the bulbs that actually tan your body.  The actual tanning bed itself is made up of steel, plastic and even wood.  They are designed to accommodate most body types; as well they are designed to be quite comfortable. 

The type and number of bulbs used in a tanning bed vary from bed to bed.  Some beds have 48-60 UV bulbs that are each 100 watts.  Other beds are designed to hold 24-46 UV bulbs that are between 100-160 watts each.  The number and type of bulbs each bed uses, depends on the size and style of the bed.  Stand up tanning booths will use less bulbs than actual tanning beds. 

Tanning beds come with a variety of features.  Your basic bed simply comes with a timer.  This ensures that you do not stay in the tanning bed too long.  However, other beds come with features such as a radio, cooling fan, a misting fan and even aroma therapy.  Tanning beds are equipped with many amenities to make your tanning experience the most enjoyable it can be.
